Inspired by the photographs of artist Malick Sidibé, who in the 60s and 70s captured youth culture in Africa, the Pre-Fall 2017 campaign reflects the vibrant attitude of the collection.Despite being blind in one eye, Malik Sidibé showed artistic talent from a young age, which gained him entrance into the Institut National des Arts de Bamako (then the École des Artisans Soudanais), which until 2004 was Mali’s only national arts school.
Inspiration came from England’s underground Northern Soul movement, sparked by the prominent uprising of black American soul music of the 1960s, as well as Malian photographer Malick Sidibé,. In 1962, Sidibé launched Studio Malick in the district of Bagadadji, which thrived during its heyday in the 1960s and 70s. His commissions included studio portraits, photos of weddings, baptisms, surprise parties, and picnics, as well as pictures of railroad, highway, and architectural construction.
